Hey everyone,
I got to thinking today and what was on my mind is that probably the number one rule in just about any endeavor is the need to remain focused and consistent. It is almost impossible to realize any goals in life if you do not maintain your focus and keep your eyes on the prize.
As difficult as it is to lose weight, it is almost (note I said, Almost) harder to maintain that weight loss. Think about it, when you are out to lose that 20, 30, 40 pounds, whatever the amount, the degree of focus you have to lose that weight is monumental. You think about it every day, you plan your meals, you work out endlessly and look for every opportunity to burn calories, and generally your daily existence revolves around losing that weight, right? Well, we here at MMM know that to be successful, this is what is needed. But that is not the topic today.
Today, my thoughts are about consistency. Maintaining that initial weight loss takes that same level of consistency and it sometimes seems like it takes more. Since the thrill of losing the weight is now gone, you have to find that excitement elsewhere and maintenance at first glance just isn’t quite as exciting.
Everyone has seen you lose the weight, and watched the new you emerge. You have bought and worn the new clothes to show off that youthful and firm new body, and you have enjoyed the compliments. Now, as you the months pass, you and more specifically, every one else, is watching and waiting to see if you will put the weight back on. We hate the thought, but we are all human. Trust me, folks are watching.
So, here you are, plugging along trying with everything you’ve got to keep that weight off. But those old habits try to creep back at you.
The key to maintaining that weight loss is remaining consistent and true to the healthy habits that helped you to lose it in the first place. Sounds simple, right? Well believe me, I realize that sometimes it can be hard but we must be vigilant. Stay focused!
Be mindful of those triggers that lead to overeating and binge sessions and do your best to avoid them like the plague. If you can’t avoid them, find a coping strategy that works for you. For example, I am realizing how much cooler temperatures really affect my energy and drive. I just want to hibernate and eat comfort foods, and mind you, I live in Florida! I find if I work out, well of course I am warmer and more energized. Once I feel good, the last thing I want to do is overeat.
Another thing you could do is focus on one of those new outfits that you know won’t fit you if you gain the weight back. Better yet, throw out all the old, larger clothes!
And if all else fails, remember my new rule of thumb: it is much easier to lose 2 to 3 pounds than it is to lose 23 pounds. Maintenance is about consistency. Sure, you can certainly loosen up a bit on the diet and exercise regimen, but only a tad. . .do not let more than an extra 3 pounds get away from you. It’s just not worth going through the trouble to lose it all over again.
Keep your eyes on the prize and be CONSISTENT!
That’s my $0.02 for today.
What helps you to remain consistent in your weight loss and maintenance plans?
‘Til next time,
